No gain in reductions

-

CAIRNS Regional Council’s “State of the Environment Report 2018-2019” has finally been released.

In the council meeting (22/07), which you can watch on the webcast, Councillor Cathy Zeiger restrains herself saying she knows other councillors will also want to gloat over the report. Councillor Amy Eden points out what a wonderful achievement it is to have reduced council greenhouse gas emissions by 46 per cent (as stated on Page 3).

It is only on Page 35 that we see there has been no gain in greenhouse gas emission reductions since 2013 when Bob Manning’s Unity Team came to office. In fact, in the last year council emissions rose by 3.5 per cent.

Cr Rob Pyne asks if electric vehicles have ever been considered. Manager Bruce Gardiner says they are still keeping their eye on the technology, though recognising that 30-40 per cent of vehicles in Europe are now electric.

In Cairns there are 16 electric vehicles out of 80,000 which represent one fiftieth of one per cent.
