MARINERS MILES AHEAD

- MATTHEW McINERNEY

JCU Mariners flyer DudleyThomas Miles has put the FNQ Rugby competition on notice, warning this squad is better than the one which broke through for the premiership last year.

The defending champions lost their opening game before bouncing back against Port Douglas last week, and Miles has been in the thick of it.

The winger has three tries to his name already, and is hungry for more ahead of Saturday’s match against the Mudcrabs under lights at Yorkeys

Knob. Miles, a former league player who has been at the Mariners since 2014, warned his side was just warming up.

“I believe we have a stronger side this year. We have younger players pushing through and we’re getting better with every game,” he said.

“The hit-outs have been good so far. The loss to Wanderers was disappointing, we let them into our head and we didn’t play rugby at all.”

Miles joined the Mariners in 2014, playing in the titlewinning reserve grade side before stepping up to A-grade.

He’s been around the park since then, spending time at fullback, centre and an ill-fated trip to fly-half.

“I didn’t go too well there,” he said with a laugh. “I like to hog the ball too much.

“I like playing at fullback so I can see everything in front of me and have all of that space.”

Miles is not complaining about being on the wing, though.

He’s scored three tries in two games.

In other games, Brothers host Barron Trinity and Port Douglas host Wanderers. Both games kick off at 4pm.
