Quality contenders to tussle for the Cairns crown

- JORDAN GERRANS

A QUALITY field of local and visiting male golfers are set to compete for the 2020 City of Cairns title, starting today at the Woree club.

The ladies division of the massive week of golf in FNQ has already been completed, as have the team events and Stableford, with the men to battle it out over three days, culminating in the final round on Sunday.

Local golfer John Conroy, who was on course on Wednesday, but will not be in the 2020 City of Cairns field, thinks there is a number of locals who could take the prize.

“A guy like Matt Spilsbury is going to be a big chance this week, and guys like Ross Argent and Dave Cameron, they are always consistent,” Conroy said.

Argent, the 2019 Cairns Open A-grade men’s winner, is hopeful of being around the mark come Sunday afternoon.

“I would say I am an outside chance but there is probably a dozen players with a really good chance, as well,” Argent said.

“There will be a strong Townsville contingent as well.

“It is always good fun this event, it is a good test over three days and the course is looking good.”

This time last year, a “clutch” final day’s play secured the City of Cairns Men’s Classic title for North Queensland

and former Townsville golfer Justin Morley.

Townsville golfer, Morley, moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2017 to “pursue the golf dream”, came close to a win at the NQ Open at Mackay Golf Club in June, but lost out in a playoff. Morley is set to defend his title.

Cairns Golf Club boss Matt Bolton earlier this week said he was expecting a few gun players from out of north Queensland to make the trip north.
