Racing runs in the blood of local speedster family

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

THE next generation of a wellknown north Queensland motor racing family put the pedal to the mettle over the weekend at Mareeba.

Alice River speedway racer Adam Jorgensen and his children Livi, 11, and Huxley, 7, raced at Mareeba on the weekend in what was a historic moment for the local motorsport family.

Huxley raced in dirt karts for the first time at the Mareeba Speedway’s opening meet of 2020 on Saturday, fulfilling

Jorgensen’s dream to see both of his children take up the family sport.

Jorgensen himself was introduced to motorsport by his parents Graham and Rhonda — both well known names in the NQ speedway community.

“It’s a very proud moment, it’s something you dream about as a parent,” Adam said.

“Huxley’s done hundreds and hundreds of rides on our home track, and he’s done a couple of practices on a big track.

“He’s been counting down the days and I’ve been beside myself to be honest.”

Adam, now 36, first started racing competitively on bitumen go karts when he was 12, and moved into speedway when he was just 16.

His parents had long established themselves on the speedway circuit when Adam started racing competitively, with Graham starting out in speedway about 40 years ago.

“There’s an old saying that a family that races together stays together,” Adam started.

“It’s exciting to race with family and travel together.

“For example, about the racing.

“We had a look at the region as well and made a bit of a holiday out of it.

“We travel everywhere to race.”

Livi also raced in the dirt karts over the weekend, having taken part in her first season of competitive racing three years ago.

She and Huxley are following in the path of their high successful father, who has won numerous Outlaw NQ titles, as well as the 2016, 2018 and 2019 NQ Modified Sedan titles. it’s not just
