Lions wing it in an expected win over Bulldogs

- JORDAN GERRANS

WITH the result a fait accompli well before the ball was bounced in Round 7, AFL Cairns Womens contenders City Lions focused on other ways to improve on Saturday afternoon.

Lions and their northern beaches rivals Centrals Trinity Beach are in different worlds in the local competition, the Holloways Beach club trying to win a flag, with the Bulldogs working on a rebuild.

So, Lions playing-coach Luana Healy made sure her group got something out of the contest, instead of just a percentage booster and the four points.

“We looked at it structurally, being able to use other areas of the ground, not just the corridor,” Healy said.

“Being able to use the wings and playing lateral football as well, that was something we really pushed this week.”

Promising youngster Litonya Motlap booted plenty of goals for Lions in the win, while Daysia Creed-Wray and Gail Sevallos shared in six majors.

The Holloways Beach club looks forward to the bye this weekend before a clash with the top of the table Manunda in Round 9 on September 5.

In other games on Saturday, Gabrielle Whittaker, Millie Stephen and Akayla Peterson all kicked two goals as Saints had enough to defeat South Cairns at Griffiths Park.
