Approve tower at peril

-

RE: the 120-128 Moore St, Trinity Beach proposed seven-storey development.

The proposed development recommended for approval by planners at this Wednesday’s council meeting will set a new precedent in Cairns.

This development will be significantly visible from Kewarra Beach and Palm Cove.

The top floor of the existing adjoining three-storey apartment block is visible to users of these beaches.

The top five storeys of the proposed two seven-storey tower blocks will erode the near pristine natural landscape that makes these beaches internationally iconic.

The systematic erosion of the Cairns Plan by the current Manning-led council has ensured the public will no longer have a say in these important planning matters.

If the council approves this apartment tower it will be a clear message to developers that anything goes.

As a community we risk losing the very reason why people select Cairns as a place to live and holiday.

Given that council planning officers have recommended this development be approved, I appeal to the State Government to exercise their call-in powers as this development blatantly contravenes the 2009-2031 FNQ Regional Plan, section 2.3, in regards to the erosion of a key scenic landscapes.
