Thursday social bowls winners were Darryl Bosch & Ron Omodei, with runners up Rod McCrae and Jim Azzopardi.

Semi final of the A-grade singles saw Joe Vella victorious over Kevin Anderson. The final between Joe and Ron Omodei this Tuesday.

Saturday Division 2 Pennants, check the board for selected players. Home games will be played at Babinda on the next three Saturdays for Section 3. Sunday will see 14 teams battle it out for honours in the Babinda Men’s 4s Day. Come and watch some good bowls.

The Babinda High School students returned on Wednesday/Thursday for competitiv­e games. Some promising talent was seen.

Special Events: Management AGM August 30 at 10am. Must be financial. Notice of motion for AGM that the meeting authorises the management committee to proceed with the constructi­on of a caretaker’s residence and disabled toilet facility at a budget cost of no more than $100,000, including 15 per cent contingenc­y. A detailed proposal will be provided to the meeting.

Ladies: Social bowls on August 13: We had 13 ladies playing, consisting of 3 teams of triples and a team of 4. As always games were played in good spirits and everyone enjoyed the afternoon. Our winners for the day were Denise Highland, Margaret Cooper and Anita McCoist, with 1W 1L +2. Our runners-up were Anne Phillips, Carole Maxted and Greta Bourke with 1W 1L +8.

August 20: We had 12 ladies playing, 4 teams of triples. Everyone had great fun and lots of laughing. We only had a winning team and they were well ahead of everyone, having 2W +27. Congratula­tions Anne Phillips, Anne Geddes and Shirley North.

Comps: We have two comps going at this time: the Championsh­ip pairs and A Grade championsh­ip. August 13: Trish Arnold and Margaret Smith played a great game against Joan Day and Angie Fleming. Margaret and Trish both put some great bowls in but were no match for Angie who was playing well and Joan having a blinder of a game. Joan and Angie won the match 32 - 14.

August 18: Maree Crees and Carole Maxted played Anne Phillips and Margaret Heffernan. It was a good game and despite their best efforts Carole and Maree just could not keep the scores close. Anne and Margaret were a force to be reckoned with, winning the match 32 - 14.

August 20: Angie Fleming and Joan Day played a great game against Maree Johnson and Pam Widdows. They were neck and neck for the first half of the game. Everyone playing well. Maree and Pam found another gear and started to edge out in front. After 20 ends Maree and Pam kept their lead, to win 23 - 10.

August 23: Playing the final of the pairs were Maree Johnson and Pam Widdows against Margaret Heffernan and Anne Phillips. What an exciting match. The game could have gone either way. Margaret and Anne edged out and won 24 - 19.

August 17: We had the next round of our A Grade championsh­ip, three games were played. Angie Fleming had a fairly close game with Maree Johnson. Both ladies giving their all. Angie managed to take the lead and won 25 - 15.

Carole Maxted and Anne Phillips had a great game, they were both scoring nicely and kept the game fairly even. The last few ends Carole took the lead and in a surprising upset won the game 25 - 17. Maree Crees and Christy Colley got off to a wobbly start. It didn’t take long for Maree to find her form and start scoring. Christy fighting to score but to no avail, managed to get into double figures before Maree swooped in for the win. Final score was 25 - 13.

August 20: 1st semi of the A Grade saw Carole Maxted and Maree Crees battle it out. It was a good game, nice bowls by both. Carole came out on top, 25 - 6.

August 21: 2nd semi saw Margaret Heffernan and Angie Fleming having a very even match. The scores were level pegging for most of the game but Margaret found a little more in the tank and with an 8-point turnaround hit the lead. After a marathon 27 ends Margaret won, 25 - 21.

August 23: Playing the final of the A Grade championsh­ip were Carole Maxted and Margaret Heffernan. What a game, scores were very close. Fighting it out in an epic battle, going right down to the wire. Winning on the smallest of measures, was Margaret Heffernan 25 - 24.

This Sunday, two teams (Col Johnson/Bob Ashford/David White/ Daryl Hoskins & Charlie Toohey/John Arnold/Chris Payne/Nev Tesch) will travel to Atherton for the Maize Festival, bus leaves the club at 7am sharp. Mick Hooker and Shane McInerney played the final of the Men’s A Grade Singles last Friday night. The game was close with Shane winning by 1 shot in the 32nd end.

The small crowd that was on hand to watch witnessed an exciting game which was played out by two of the best players in the club. Congratula­tions Shane and all the best with the FNQ Champion of Champions. In the A Grade Men’s Pairs Kevin Foorde and Fred Caltabiano are due to play within the next two weeks.

On Sunday, 10 players enjoyed a game of 3 bowl pairs and triples with the bragging rights going to Fred and Edgo and their respective teams.

One new player joined the 16 regular players on the West Cairns covered green last Monday to play mixed social bowls. The winners drawn were the team of Lyn Small, Belle Gillan and Rita Johnston. As usual the afternoon was not affected by the weather. No competitio­n is involved in our games which makes them most enjoyable. For those who prefer a social afternoon with like-minded bowlers, we suggest that you contact selector Rosemary on 0409 624 623 who will clarify any questions you have. The games commence at 1.30pm each Monday after the cards are called at 1.15pm and conclude at 4.30pm when the game winner is announced. There is a break halfway in the afternoon for a short break. Players are of various ages and from all walks of life. If you are new to bowls, we can also arrange for instructio­n on the basics of the game to be provided and club bowls made available for your use. We look forward to meeting you in the near future.
