ONE of Cairns’ biggest race days of the year is offering a welcome boost to businesses across the city.

Cairns Jockey Club will host day two of the new-look Red Beret Hotel Cairns Cup on Friday, with more than 1500 tickets already sold.

It follows a successful Ladies Day at Cannon Park Racecourse last week, an event that attracted a crowd of 800 people.

Tokunai Hair is one of many businesses benefiting from the return of race days, with appointments for hair and makeup in high demand. Salon master stylist Krystle Tokunai said her team was ready and excited to help racegoers look and feel their best for the big day.

“It’s pretty insane,” Ms Tokunai said. “It’s a bit of a mixed bag on the style people are requesting. It really depends on the fascinators … we work the style around their look.”

Cairns Jockey Club event and marketing manager Shahnee Ricci said there had been strong interest in Friday’s cup carnival.

Some tickets are still available, but only online.

“Due to demand we released a second general admission area on Monday — general admission zone 2 — there are 100 tickets remaining in this section,” Ms Ricci said.

“All other areas are sold out. No tickets will be available to purchase at the gate on race day.

“We have excellent fields and look forward to a great day of racing, including the $85,000 Red Beret Hotel Cairns Cup.”

About $13,000 in prizes will be on offer for fashionistas entering the Nautilus Aviation Fashions on the Field.

Ms Ricci said there were lady of the day, menswear and couples categories.

“The Ladies Day competition was fantastic and we are very eager to see our fashion forward entrants this week,” she said.

“The Cairns Jockey Club is very excited to be hosting our members, the public and industry on Friday. The team are busy preparing a COVIDSafe and entertaining event.”
