Foster, an unfit 57-year-old, is crash-tackled and brought down. Those two young fit police officers must be very proud of themselves. I could see that they had been training that well-executed tackle. I for one was not impressed.

Don, Earlville

Not for one second do I have any sympathy for Peter Foster. However two young burly coppers crash tackling an overweight short bloke aged 57 walking along the beach. Really fellas?

On poor driving

On driving behaviour in Cairns, why are the police not watching the amount of illegal U-turns being committed every day. City intersections at Aplin and McLeod or Florence and Martyn streets the practice is out of control and downright dangerous. I live at the Aplin Street intersection and you can see a minimum of three cars every traffic signal cycle, complete this illegal manoeuvre. Unless signed U-turns are illegal at traffic lights.

Rule-breaking Cairns drivers start doing the right thing. I hope there is a police blitz on this dangerous behaviour in the next week.

Concerned driver, Cairns City

On poor driving. Why do we need refresher training in first aid, health and safety, etc, but not driving? Forget about fines, they only hurt the poor. The penalty for traffic infringements should be to prove you can pass the written and practical driving tests. That would induce compliance more effectively than the existing system.

On other matters

Paradise Palms shock (CP, 25/8). Yes the fact that Cairns City is losing this wonderful asset is a disgrace. Maybe sense will come about yet but it’s gone to an overgrown wasteland which breaks the hearts of those who enjoyed it.

Queensland Budget and Debt. On Wednesday the Premier told a journalist to ask the LNP how they were financing their election promises. Fair enough. But could the Treasurer please tell us how he plans to pay down the $100 billion plus debt. I think it’s called a Budget. Both sides should release their figures prior to the election.

Cal, Kewarra Beach

Don from Earlville becries public servants getting paid from public money. Let’s stop that now and have no police, health care workers, emergency first responders and all forms of law and order just to name a few of the essential public purse employees. Reasoned sensible arguments are needed not ill-informed nonsense.

Hornet plots a stinging KO kid so go Jeff Horn and win your boxing match. Janelle, Woree

Labor has been in power for 25 out of 30 years since 1989. On the eve of the upcoming election they decide to pretend they are interested in the Bradfield water scheme. This of course is only after One Nation party and LNP have been pushing the water issue. Labor won’t release its financial situation so how could anyone have trust in them again?

BJ, Rangeview

When we give up cash (CP, 26/8) we not only become totally reliant on reliable, full-time electricity, we also place ourselves entirely at the mercy of the banks. I’d rather swim with sharks.

Joanne, Manunda

Closed borders for the poor, open slather for the rich and remember only your bank balance decides if you’re all in this together. Ah Queensland, corrupter by the day, eh?
