Respond to signs and live to ride another day

- TOBY VUE

WHEN Chris Marsh looks back at April 4 this year, he can see he had all the warning signs of a heart attack.

The Cairns man was more puffed than usual from golfing and more worn out from playing with his grandchildren. He also had pain in his chest and his shoulders.

Mr Marsh now knows he dodged a bullet, needing four stents inserted in his coronary arteries by Cairns Hospital interventional cardiologist Dr Ram Saireddy.

“I’m so grateful for what he and the team did for me,” Mr Marsh said.

“I’ve got way more energy. I can’t believe the difference in how I feel now.”

Mr Marsh is now an advocate for the annual Cardiac Challenge, a cycling event from Cairns to Cooktown that raises funds for the FNQ Hospital Foundation.

Dr Saireddy said the foundation had been instrumental in supporting the addition of new catheterisation labs and cardiac services to Cairns to help achieve positive patient outcomes for people like Mr Marsh.

Funds will go towards a cardiac ultrasound device and a specialised anaesthetic device. This year’s event on September 19-21 will be the 14th edition, with more than $4m raised so far.
