Lions on track for dream run to achieve treble

A DOMINANT 9-0 win against Stratford is just the first step towards Leichhardt realising their dream to win a treble.

Last year’s FNQ Premier League champions, Leichhardt ended their 2019 with two losses in the most important games of the year: the grand final and the Crad Evans Shield.

But after a strong first half in the 2020 campaign, the squad, now under Angelo Caravella, has their sights set on turning their temporary hold on top spot into a more permanent arrangement over the next six weeks.

“Every game now is preparation for us to play in the semi finals or a grand final,” Caravella said.

“If we win every game we’ll be able to win the premiership, and hopefully we can turn that into a grand final win and then the Crad Evans.

“It’s a goal shared by four teams. Everyone wants to win, and I think it’s fair and reasonable to say they’re thinking the same way.”

Leichhardt are unbeaten after seven games but two draws — against Edge Hill United and Mareeba United — meant they were behind the Tigers halfway through the Premier League season.

But the Lions aren’t playing to finish second.

The mindset of several key players aligns with that of their coach, and they have started their roll towards achieving that goal with a one-sided win against Stratford.

Ria Collie scored three goals while Michaela Noremberczyk bagged a brace, but Caravella said rising star Tonia-Marie Rantucci was unlucky to not feature more on the scoresheet.

“Tonia-Marie has been outstanding for us,” he said.

“She didn’t get a big bunch of goals but it could have been a lot more.

“Ria brings a lot of composure to the squad, and she’s also very aggressive in that final third.

“We’re lucky to have a front two or three where we can slot anybody into the positions.”

In the other game, JCU Strikers were forced to fight from behind to secure a tight 2-1 win at Innisfail. Southside hosts Mareeba United tonight.
