Cutters’ loss reaction impresses Weetra

- JORDAN GERRANS

BOOM recruit Daniel Weetra says he is proud of the way his new teammates responded following their shock loss to City Lions this month.

Weetra’s South Cairns side was not perfect last Saturday at Griffiths Park against Saints but it did enough to get past its fellow top-three hopeful, just seven days after it was upset by Lions.

South Cairns plays a rare Friday night AFL Cairns fixture, travelling to Watsons Oval to face the displaced Manunda, which did not have access to Cazalys Stadium due to the upcoming elite games to FNQ.

Weetra, who has experience in the NTFL, SANFL and NEAFL, says the defeat to

Lions was something his teammates learnt from.

“It was character-building. We could have got angry and cracked it but got on top of it early last week and identified it, knocked it on the head,” Weetra said.

“We had a chance to turn it around against Saints, which we did and that was pleasing for coach John Tootell and the club.”

Weetra says he will be in FNQ for the remainder of the season and is loving playing with close mates Damien Dewis and Jermaine Wardle.

“Initially I moved over because of work but I had a few good mates playing at the Cutters, Wardle and Dewis. It is a bonus to come have a kick here as well,” Weetra said.

“It was a tricky time for me to move over with all the coronavirus restrictions. It has made it hard for everyone.

“I am just enjoying being able to play footy again after the break.”

Tootell says his classy recruit has been as advertised since arriving at Fretwell Park.

“He has been good the whole time, he just adds that polish,” Tootell said.

“He is valuable for us because when he gets that ball, he does not waste it very often.”

Weetra has been in the Cutters’ best players in two of his three games this campaign.
