Coast flights resume

THE battered tourism industry will receive a major boost on Tuesday with the resumption of flights between Cairns and the Gold Coast. The Jetstar flights will resume for the first time since March in a move estimated to inject millions of dollars into the economy. The Gold Coast-Cairns service will add eight extra flights a week to the route. The flights were secured as part of the Queensland government’s $15m Aviation Recovery Fund.

Two vehicles collide

A PATIENT was taken to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition after a two-vehicle crash that occurred at the intersecti­on of Aumuller and Scott streets at 6am on Monday. No other injuries were recorded.

Woman hurt in crash

THREE patients were assessed after a single-vehicle crash on Range Rd in Yarrabah just before 8.30pm on Sunday. A woman in her 20s was taken to Yarrabah Hospital in a stable condition, while two males in their 20s were uninjured and did not require transport.

Knuth to run again

SHANE Knuth has thrown his hat into the re-election ring and announced he will be the KAP candidate for Hill in the upcoming state election. Mr Knuth, who has held the seat for three years, said “it was becoming clear” the major parties would not win the October 31 poll “in their own right” which placed the KAP “in a strong position”.

Jobs squad to fly in

CAIRNS will be among the destinatio­ns visited by a flying squad of jobs experts aiming to get people off welfare and back into work. Employment Minister Michaelia Cash will today announce jobs taskforces will be sent to Cairns, the Gold Coast, Townsville, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast and Wivenhoe. The “employment facilitato­rs” will check out the regions’ conditions, including demographi­cs and industries, before creating a plan for that area. It will include reaching out to small businesses, and co-ordinating with employment agencies and government services to see what training people need to get work.
