Speedsters 60km/h over mar Road Safety Week

- GRACE MASON

TWO motorists clocked at more than 60km/h over the speed limit on Far North roads, including a suburban Cairns street, have proved to lowlights of Road Safety Week.

Police blitzed the region in the past seven days, with more than 88,000 vehicles monitored by speed cameras, radars or random breath tests.

While the majority were found to be doing the right thing, Far North police Insp Brad Winks highlighted two shock speeding incidents which are set to leave the offenders more than $1000 out of pocket.

One motorist was clocked at 124km/h in the 60km/h zone on Greenslopes St at Edge Hill.

“That is obviously atrocious behaviour,” he said.

Another was caught doing 170km/h on the Bruce Highway near Innisfail in a 100km/ h zone.

“This was a blatant disregard for the safety of the community in general,” he said.

“These are ridiculous speeds and a potential danger for people around the area.

“There is no way anyone can take action (at that speed) if a child or animal runs out in front of them.”

The highest drink-driving reading during the week was 0.23 per cent on the Kennedy Highway at Kuranda.

Inspector Winks said there was a total of 586 detections in the region, which included speeding, drink-driving, unlicensed or unregistered vehicles. He said two thirds of those detected were for speeding.

The overall rates of detection were lower than a typical week, he said.

“We’re pleased with the drink-driving (numbers), but speeding continues to be a problem,” he said. “We’d really like people to learn to slow down and be responsible.”
