Lion Davey wraps up his role with AFL Cairns

-

FORMER Melbourne champion Aaron Davey has finished up at AFL Cairns after a few years working with the league.

Davey will remain as City Lions’ playing-coach but last month ended his role with AFL Cairns.

The 37-year-old started with AFL Cairns in late 2017 when he first moved up from Melbourne.

He was stood down from his role for long periods of this year due to the coronavirus shutdown, along with many others at the AFL.

When Davey returned to work recently, there was to be a change in his role, where he previously managed the women’s competition as well as other tasks, but he has instead decided to step away.

Davey, who played 178 games at the highest level, has a few different opportunities in the pipeline work-wise following his stint with AFL Cairns.

■ MANY AFL Cairns clubs will be changing their weekly training schedules over the next few weeks to make sure they can attend the elite games while they are in town.

Port Douglas, which has the bye this weekend, usually trains Tuesday and Thursday.

But, that has been shifted to Monday and Wednesday so the team can head to Cazalys and watch Sydney and

Melbourne on Thursday evening. The players pushed for the switch, according to coach Brad Cooper.

“It is about playing golf or making the coach change the training days so they can have a few quiet ones at the footy,” Cooper said. “It is good for the guys to be close away from footy as well.”

■ KAREENA White says she is flattered to be recognised as one of the top coaches in Far North Queensland.

White, player-coach at the undefeated Manunda Hawks, has been short-listed as one of the region’s best coaches by the The Cairns Post.

Hundreds of nominations came through for FNQ’s best coach, and there are 21 shortlisted coaches in the running.

“I was flattered when I read that,” she said with a laugh.

White does an excellent job for Hawks and would be a worthy winner. Check out the full list at cairnspost.com.au/sport.

■ The first of five elite games at Cazalys Stadium to finish season 2020 is set to be a cracker on Thursday night.

Melbourne was brilliant on Saturday night downing St Kilda at the beautiful Traeger Park in Alice Springs before its FNQ game.

The victory put the Demons eighth on the ladder with four matches to go, with Simon Goodwin’s side to play Sydney on Thursday night at Cazalys.

The Swans arrived in Cairns late on Saturday night following their defeat to Port Adelaide in South Australia.
