Wanderers heading for top

- MATTHEW MCINERNEY

WANDERERS are in the box seat to secure top spot in FNQ Rugby’s women’s competition after a come-from-behind win against their nearest rivals.

Mudcrabs powered to a 17-0 lead by half time but the Green Machine surged in an astounding second half to snatch a 19-17 win at the Crabpot.

Wanderers coach Dennis Hearn said his side roared back into the contest with a muchimproved second half display.

“Mudcrabs were clearly the better side in the first half but we spoke at halftime about sticking to our game plan,” Hearn said.

“We had to slow things down and get back to our structure.

“We took the lead with about five minutes left and did everything to hold on.”

Hearn said the leadership trio of Mel Leblanc, Stevie Darby-Brennan and Charlotte Johnstone had stood up when it mattered most throughout the regular season.

Mudcrabs coach Gareth Williams said his side simply ran out of players due to their shortened bench, but the Yorkeys Knob side will have most of those back for this Saturday’s clash with Penrhyn.

Wanderers will face the bottom-placed Brothers.
