Decider to be played in state capital

- MARCO MONTEVERDE

BRISBANE will host another major sporting grand final with confirmation the Super Netball decider will be held at Nissan Arena on October 18.

Just as the Sunshine State was rewarded with the biggest game on the AFL calendar for saving the COVID-affected season, Queensland has also been given netball hosting rights after being the competition’s 2020 base.

The netball final takes place on Sunday, October 18, with the week to culminate with the AFL grand final at the Gabba on Saturday, October 24.

Organisers will work with Nissan Arena management and Queensland Health to maximise attendance for the decider. A COVID-capped crowd of 2000 has been in place during the season.

Super Netball CEO Chris Symington was pleased to confirm Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast as hosts for the finals series.

“All teams have played matches at both Nissan Arena and USC Stadium throughout the season so there will be a level of familiarity there,” Symington said.

“We have taken guidance from our clubs in spacing the finals matches over three weeks after the condensed home-and-away season to ensure all teams involved in finals have adequate time to recover and prepare.’’

The Super Netball finals series starts at the Sunshine Coast’s USC Stadium, which will host the major semi-final (1st v 2nd) on Saturday October 3, and the minor semi-final (3rd v 4th) the following day.

The preliminary final on October 11 will be played at Nissan Arena or USC Stadium, with the highest-finishing team involved in the match to choose the venue. The grand final takes place a week later at Nissan Arena at 1pm.
