SWIMMERS MAKE A SPLASH AT SHORT COURSE CHAMPS

- PARKING THE BUS with Matthew McInerney

SUPPORTERS are about to be treated to two absolutely brilliant games of football.

Edge Hill United will host Leichhardt at Tiger Park on Saturday, and the two Premier League games are battles between the top two teams.

It’s hard to pick which will be better. The women’s game was closer the first time they met, but Leichhardt’s men’s team has become arguably the most entertaining one to watch in the local league.

Edge Hill United’s men’s team is undefeated and holds a seven-point advantage over a Leichhardt team that, despite a slow start, has lost only once.

The women’s teams have scored more than 100 goals between them and neither side has tasted defeat this year.

They were last year’s grand final combatants and they’re shaping up to be there again.

The FA Women’s Super League has attracted headlines for its star power, but a glaring issue has been exposed.

Chelsea’s monstrous 9-0 win against Bristol City was either a fantastic display of skill or an embarrassment, depending which side you’re on.

There were a few worldclass goals in there, but should talent be so concentrated you wind up with super teams at the expense of development and an even competition?

It’s a similar issue to grapple with at a local level, with a clear divide between the top four and bottom three of the Women’s Premier League.

It doesn’t do anyone much good getting belted by double digits each week, but games between those at a similar phase of their program wind up being crackers.

There is no understating the importance of Ricky Tuigaloa to Innisfail this season.

The striking sensation has scored 11 of his side’s 15 goals, but he’s been unable to find the back of the net in their past two games. Edge Hill United’s Crios O’Hare is breathing down his neck in the chase for the Golden Boot with 10 goals.
