PARKING THE BUS

THE first week of finals for FNQ Football’s premier competitions is in the books, and six teams have punched their tickets to the big dance.

And while those teams come from four clubs, expect to see plenty of yellow and black at Endeavour Park on October 31.

Five of the premier division grand finals will be played at Endeavour Park’s main field on the day, and three of those will feature a team from Edge Hill United after their Premier League men’s, women’s and colts teams won their respective qualifying finals.

They remain in the Premier Youth and men’s reserves finals, with those teams in preliminary finals this week.

Much has been made of Edge Hill United’s unbeaten run in the Premier League this year, but could the club be about to complete one of the most dominant seasons by a club in recent history?

■ Mareeba United smells blood in the water as they prepare to face Leichhardt in two massive Premier League preliminary finals.

Both Lions teams were humbled by Edge Hill Utd, and they return home licking their wounds in preparation of their most important games of the season. The women’s side haven’t had to bounce back after a loss this year after putting together an unbeaten regular season, while two key players from the men’s team were shown red cards and could miss the game.

Mareeba Utd have their own injury concerns, but the opportunity is there for them to cause a massive boilover.

Is the Edge Hill United Premier League dressing room the most lit of all teams in the FNQ Football competition?

It was buzzing in the aftermath of their 9-0 demolition of Leichhardt as they qualified for the grand final, but it felt like the walls were shaking the celebration was that loud.

■ Nothing went right for Nathan Haydon on Saturday.

The Leichhardt goalkeeper endured arguably the worst night he’s had on a football field in that nine-goal loss, but the pain didn’t end at fulltime.

Leichhardt players, coaches and officials weren’t in talking moods after fulltime, but Haydon took it upon himself to address the Cairns Post and one cameraman. Unfortunately for Haydon, there were a few pauses in the interview as the music from United’s victory party interrupted the audio.
