MAY 10 JAMES GORDON BENNETT

American newspaper publisher born in 1841. Known for his newspapers he was also a keen yachtsman and polo player, but his penchant for causing scandal gave rise to the expression “Gordon Bennett.” He died in France in 1918.

MAY 11 IAN REDPATH

Australian cricketer born in 1941. He made his test debut in 1964 and played in 66 tests. He made a comeback to play in one day internatio­nals during the controvers­ial establishm­ent of World Series Cricket in the late 1970s.

MAY 12 RAMI MALEK

American actor born in 1981. He is known for appearance­s in TV series such as 24 and Mr Robot, the film Night At The Museum, and his Oscar-winning role as Freddie in Bohemian Rhapsody.

MAY 13 RITCHIE VALENS

American singer born Richard Valenzuela in 1941. He was known for his hits La Bamba and Donna. He died in 1959 when the plane he was travelling on with The Big Bopper Richardson and Buddy Holly crashed.

MAY 14 TIM ROTH

English actor born in 1961. He made his acting debut in 1982 playing a skinhead in Made in Britain and has since gone on to star in films such as Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Rob Roy and TV series The Tin Star. He has also directed and produced films.

MAY 15 XAVIER HERBERT

Australian author born Alfred Jackson in 1901. He had several different jobs before turning to writing, publishing his first book Capricorni­a in 1938. His 1975 novel Poor Fellow My Country won him the Miles Franklin Award. He died in 1984.

MAY 16 CHRISTIAN LACROIX

French fashion designer born in 1951. He studied art history intent on becoming a museum curator but he began designing clothes and in 1987 opened his own fashion house. It was later sold and he now designs freelance.
