Far North on Kate’s radar

- KATHY McCABE

WHEN Kate Miller-Heidke gets mad at music industry cliches, she gets even by writing a song.

Recent tune People Pleaser will be a crowd pleaser when the Eurovision and Masked Singer queen finally kickstarts her long-awaited national tour, which will begin at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre on September 30.

“I love it when I can get anger into a song; that song is going to be really fun to play live,” she said.

“That song was born when somebody in the industry told me that I needed to write a song like Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy.

“It was about how I didn’t want to and I wasn’t going to, but I still ripped off the bass line despite myself.”

Miller-Heidke had planned an Australian tour to celebrate her return to pop music with her top-10 record Child In Reverse last year. The pandemic restrictions on live gigs and border closures have forced her back to the drawing board several times.

“This was supposed to happen a year ago … and it’s been through many different incarnations since then,” she said. “Six months ago, it was going to be all outdoor venues and wineries and now it’s gone into theatres.”

The Zero Gravity star kept herself occupied with myriad projects during the hiatus.

A couple of weeks before her album was released, Miller-Heidke, cast as The Queen, was the runner-up in the second season of The Masked Singer.

She also recently filmed scenes for the new Nakkiah Lui television comedy series Preppers and there is another TV film score project

she will work on with her partner in life and music, Keir Nuttall.

The pair, who scored the music for the Muriel’s Wedding stage production, also have another theatre project in the works. And there will be a new single, a collaboration with indie pop artist and activist Jaguar Jonze believed to address issues harassment and sexism in the music industry.

Tickets for the Child In Reverse tour go on sale on June 23.
