Life’s a village
THEY’RE HERE FOR THE EVENT OF THEIR LIVES BUT THEY ARE MAKING THE MOST OF BEING TOGETHER — AND AWAY FROM LOCKDOWNS
AMAN’S gotta eat – even when he is training for an Olympic gold medal. Diving sensation Sam Fricker, 19, has arrived in Tokyo more than a week before his events are due to start – giving him plenty of time to enjoy all the Olympic Village has to offer.
The 10m platform diver said one of his favourite things about village life was the food.
“It is so cool, we can get food at any time, which is awesome,” Fricker said. “They have all different cuisines, sushi, fish, pasta all in the same place.” With his event not until August 6, Fricker said he was focusing on his technical movements and just getting used to how things worked at an Olympics.
“Everything is so much bigger and every day is something new,” Fricker said. “I have ages until my event so I’m trying not to get too excited.”
The teen will compete on August 6 in the heats of the men’s 10m platform. The semi-finals and final will be held the following day.
Fricker has been sharing his journey with his 618,000 TikTok followers – including snaps of him in the training pool, inside his room in the village, massages and the Opening Ceremony.
And he is not alone.
Hundreds of athletes are documenting their Olympic journey on social media, posting videos and photos from the village, their rooms and their venues.
Among the most prolific posters is swimmer Emily Seebohm who is running an Instagram vlog on life in the village. Even though it is her fourth Games she is still lapping up the atmosphere.
And although they are having fun, many teams are posting they still have to do their chores.
