A bit saucy

USE YOUR BOTTLE AND SAVE MONEY BY MAKING YOUR OWN SAUCES AND CONDIMENTS

- LINDY LAWLER

Bottled sauces can cost a pretty penny if you get them from the supermarket. Caramel sauce from the grocery store can set you back between $4 and $6 a pop.

Tomato sauce can cost up to $6, and even Worcestershire sauce can be expensive, ranging from $2 to $5.

Store-bought sauces are sold in smaller quantities and can often be filled with sugar and preservatives to provide a long shelf-life.

So, what can we do to start saving money on groceries? Simple. Just turn to the wisdom of the ages:

Nan’s cookbook.

Old-fashioned recipes, such as those found in the cookbooks of our elders, are not only homemade; they’re alchemical creations and penny-pinchers, too. They were born in a time when ingredients were substituted for what was on hand or what grew in the region.

These small changes helped to create a plethora of similar dishes worldwide but with just a little twist in each of them, depending on where you lived.

So, why not take the time to relive the old days and make a batch of brand new homemade sauces that reflect the time you’re living in right now? Use up glass jars and bottles that you may have been keeping for the recycle bin (but make sure you sterilise them before use). Gather recipes, or use up what you have to create something new.

Soon, the fridge or pantry will be well-stocked with delicious sweet and savoury sauces, and you’ll have stretched ingredients and prevented food waste, just like grandma did.
