Fyfe down for count and Franklin up for nervous wait on hits

- GREG DAVIS

IT was superstar carnage at Metricon Stadium on Sunday as Sydney’s Lance Franklin and Fremantle’s Nat Fyfe were in the spotlight for the wrong reasons in the Swans’ 40-point victory over the Dockers.

Dual Brownlow medallist Fyfe could have played his last match of the year after he left the ground in the second quarter after aggravating his right shoulder injury while Franklin is certain to come under scrutiny for two incidents.

His left elbow made contact with Fremantle defender Luke Ryan’s head in the second quarter while he also put a heavy bump on Nathan Wilson in the first term.

The incident with Ryan looked more serious as Franklin was tackled near the boundary line and swung his arms in a bid to get free.

Meanwhile, Fyfe was helped from the field and was taken straight into the rooms after he put his right hand on the ball which was then kicked by Swan Sam Wicks. He immediately grabbed his arm and stayed on the ground.

The Swans kept their top four hopes alive on the back of eight unanswered goals across the second and third quarters to claim their 12th win.

Isaac Heeney was the star for Sydney with five goals, 22 disposals, a mark that sparked the Swans and a smother that stopped a certain goal.

Josh Kennedy was the driving force in the midfield with 34 disposals, 16 contested possessions, seven tackles and seven clearances.

It was a disastrous afternoon for the Dockers who have fallen a game behind the race for the top eight and copped injuries to Fyfe and

Michael Walters (hamstring) in David Mundy’s 350-game milestone.

The Swans pulled away with the first five goals after halftime.

It was a big week for Mundy. He celebrated his 36th birthday and a contract extension before his 350-game milestone. His form would suggest that a “Mundy 4-Hundy” celebration in the coming years is more than a possibility.

He had a quiet day by his lofty standards, 17 touches, three clearances and a goal.

Swan Heeney ensured the mark of the year is not a fait accompli for Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt with a hanger in the second term. He took a ride on top of Luke Ryan and soared high before clunking the Sherrin.

His mark and goal sparked the Swans, who needed a lift with the Dockers well on top.
