Clutch Calvert impresses in Survivor Golf’s big weekend

-

A TEENAGER has become the first junior to qualify for the Survivor Golf Series final after the tournament’s return to Innisfail Golf Club.

Luke Newman and 13-yearold Liam Calvert, from Team Master and Apprentice, were the third team to qualify from a massive weekend at Innisfail, which featured four two-person Ambrose tournaments over two days at the prestigious nine-hole course.

Calvert, who was named the Drummond Junior Ambassador for North Queensland last week, stepped up to deliver the final, crucial shots in two of the three play-off holes.

“That winning putt, he came straight over and said the onefoot putt felt more like sevenfoot,” co-founder and chief executive David Cameron said.

“It was a three-way play-off, but he had to step up and make birdie twice to keep it alive. “This is what it’s about.

“We had a women’s pairing come in third, we had four father-son pairings over this weekend. We want to create those kind of experiences.”

Jake and Caine Cockle became the first father-son team to qualify, while Joseph Amerio and Brad Chase (The Bushies), and Lance Doyle and Colin Bidgood (O’Doyle Rules), also qualified at Innisfail.

Teams can comprise of any combination of males, females and junior players, although both players must have a registered handicap.

The Survivor Golf Series final will be held at the Sheraton Grand Mirage in Port Douglas on November 26-27.

Tournament organiser Mark Moss said he couldn’t be prouder of the growth and success in the last year.

“Twelve months ago, the Survivor team had a vision that has now come to life and Innisfail is where we hosted our very first tournament,” Moss said.

“The club was extremely generous and supportive in giving us a chance and now we can proudly say we will be hosting a Survivor Golf Series tournament here every year.”

The next event will be held at Palmer Sea Reef Golf Course at Port Douglas on January 8, then Millaa Millaa Golf Club on April 16-17.
