Decorative tips to get your home ready for Christmas

- KIRSTEN JAKUBENKO

Decorating your home for Christmas doesn’t have to be stressful or expensive to make it beautiful. Here, we have some simple ideas that will put your inner Grinch to sleep and instead have you embracing the Christmas spirit into your home.

Declutter

Before you start decorating the house with boughs of holly, set a couple of days aside and declutter! Check out your shelves and put away ornamental items you no longer want. Check rooms for items you no longer need. Perhaps you could even sell some things and earn yourself a few extra dollars over the holidays. Decluttering your home will not only give you more space for Christmas decor but you will be amazed at how good you will feel too.

Special touches

A special part of Christmas would have to be the handmade touches and special items passed down, for without them Christmas wouldn't be the same. Hang with pride your children’s Christmas crafts from school and get creative with your Christmas cards. You can have fun displaying them on a wall in the shape of a Christmas tree using temporary adhesive. Another creative option is to make your own wreath using an assortment of branches from the garden - the perfect invitation into your home. Create a winter wonderland indoors using snowflake-like paper cutouts and a string of fairy lights. Then to make your own snowflake garland, slide the paper cutouts over each bulb. Hang your creation inside a doorway or a window, and enjoy your DIY creation.

Brighten outside

Make your yard more festive with Christmas wreaths, garden lanterns, decorations and lights. You don’t have to go overboard, a few simple touches here and there will do wonders to brighten your spaces and prepare your home for Christmas.

Be ready to entertain

Make your Christmas get togethers extra special this year by wowing your guests with festive themed serving ware and table decorations; utilising items you already have at home and in the garden. Make it easy on yourself by stocking up on holiday favourite snacks and drinks so you’re prepared should those unexpected guests drop in.

Hopefully these decorative tips to get your home ready for Christmas avoid any holiday scramble stress so you can enjoy what matters most - spending quality time with your family and friends.
