FLORIST SAYS SHE’S LUCKY TO BE ALIVE

- MARK MURRAY

A FAR North florist has revealed how schoolchildren were spared “certain tragedy” following a shocking smash on a quiet street which has left her with a $50,000 headache.

More details have emerged of Mossman Florist’s Heike Andrson’s brush with death on Front St when a car cannoned into her shopfront.

The much-loved resident said she should be “as dead as a maggot” as the community wraps their arms around her in an attempt to limit tens of thousands of dollars in damage and losses.

She was not insured.

It can be revealed the male driver of the vehicle who drove across an intersection and through her window, with his three-yearold daughter in the car, had suffered a seizure.

“He was on his way to work and was dropping off his little girl,” she said.

“If I had been in the shop I would be as dead as a maggot.”

When asked if she had purchased a lottery ticket given her good fortune to be alive, Ms Andrson replied, ‘What with? I am absolutely skint, mate’.

She said the Christmas school holidays had saved her “a lot more grief”. “If it wouldn’t have been school holidays there would have been kids walking past the shop, certain tragedy,” she said.

“I think Mossman is pretty pissed off I didn’t die because they miss out on a booze-up at the bowls club. I’ve still got a sense of humour, buddy.”

Port Douglas shuttle bus operator Matthew Skubala has launched a Go Fund Me campaign for Ms Andrson, saying she was due for “a bit of luck” with her husband currently battling cancer in hospital. The fundraiser has raised $560.
