FESTIVE SEASON A GOOD TIME TO REFLECT

- Jennifer Spilsbury Editor

Christmas is a wonderful time of year but it can be stressful too. High expectations from little ones for what the jolly fat man will bring them, stretched finances, frayed tempers, strained familial relationships and never having enough time can turn the dial up tenfold.

But with a deep breath, it can be a fulfilling time – if you think beyond one giant day and what this festive period actually is all about.

A lot of attention is put on New Year and what resolutions should be made to make you leaner, healthier, smarter, wealthier; but Christmas time, for me, is the time to sit back and ponder what the year has been all about and, indeed, what is important in your life.

This year has been like last year – full of challenges and they’ve come at us seemingly faster than ever.

Keeping up with Covid regulations has been mind-spinning and fatiguing.

Ask just about anybody and they’ll tell you they’re ready for a rest.

For many, Covid has made people look for simple pleasures and being together with family this Christmas will be even more important than ever, particularly for those who have been separated for long periods.

Seeking out gifts for loved ones has been an even nicer experience this year although the last few have been purchased while wearing a mask.

As I wrapped gifts at the weekend I couldn’t help but think of those in our lives who are no longer with us; the Tasmanian jumping castle tragedy underscores just how precious lives and love really are.

We’re on the countdown to Christmas and with my pudding now steamed and wrapped I am thankful for the small pleasures in life and for the relationships in my world.

My hope is that you get to pause for a moment and reflect during this special time.
