BEVO: FINCH DEBATE OVER

- BEN HORNE

WHITE ball doyen Michael Bevan says he believes debate over Aaron Finch’s place in Australia’s T20 World Cup team is “done and dusted”.

The Australian captain found the middle of the bat at last on the recent tour of India with quick-fire scores of 22 off 13 and 31 off 15 to raise hopes his recent form slump was specific to 50-over cricket.

Cameron Green’s form surge looms large over the Australian squad given he was not in the World Cup party of 15. However Bevan said Finch had done what he needed to do to keep the wolves from the door ahead of the World Cup starting on October 22.

Bevan and a host of other celebrities participated in a longest-hit competition at Sydney Harbour on Tuesday – with the Australian one-day hero adamant Finch should be able to lead his team into the World Cup without any distraction or conjecture over his place in the team.

“You’re only as good as your last couple of games, right, and I think that’s what everyone was hoping for,” Bevan said.

The biggest-hit launch next to the Sydney Opera House was taken out by Scott Rodgie, a grade cricketer from Northern Districts in Sydney, with Greater Western Sydney AFL player Lachie Whitfield among the standouts.

Women’s star Alyssa Healy, who was representing Kayo and Fox Cricket, got in on the fun as well, but had a serious point to make about Finch’s World Cup prospects.

Healy has battled form issues into past World Cups, but has had a habit of delivering when it matters.

The batting ace said she believed Finch could do the same. “Oh I think so,” Healy said. “I think Finchy is an unbelievable player. As a fan of the game and as a fan of his I hope he goes out there and does an amazing job and I have no doubts he will.”
