Fogden planning daring double with colt

- TRENTON AKERS

KACY Fogden could attempt an ambitious plan which will see her expensive colt Best Of Bordeaux run in two Group 1 races in the space of eight days.

The Gold Coast-based trainer confirmed she will accept with her three-year-old in Friday night’s Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) before heading to the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington the next week on Derby Day.

The last-start Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes winner is chasing his first Group 1 after finishing second to Fireburn in the Golden Slipper during the autumn. While Sydney jockey Tim Clark is booked for the Manikato Stakes on Friday night, Fogden said she would wait and see what the race looks like before deciding to go around.

“We will see the barriers and have a look at the speed maps when they come out,” Fogden said. “The Coolmore is the priority, but he is a horse we could do both with if he draws well and it is suitable.

“He gets better the more you race him.”

Fogden concedes she couldn’t help but think about what could have been after seeing fellow three-year-old Giga Kick win The Everest on Saturday in just his fifth start — but is convinced her colt will get his time to shine in Melbourne.

Fogden is looking to make it back-to-back wins for Coolmore in their own race, after Home Affairs took it out last year. After suffering a minor setback in Sydney prior to his Roman Consul victory, Fogden said she was keen to get Best Of Bordeaux to Victoria.

Best Of Bordeaux is rated an $18 chance with TAB for the Manikato and is $8 for the Coolmore, with Everest winner Giga Kick $3.50 favourite.
