Re: Uniting the nation as one? I might be missing the point, but instead of uniting our nation’s population to be one Australia, now more than ever it appears that every group is being pigeonholed into a separate entity and the only thing coming out of TV are so called reality shows showing how quick humans turn on each other? Only good thing on TV these days is the “off” switch. Icarus, Atherton

Attempting to recycle plastic (CP, 10/11) is insanity on stilts. No country has been able to do it because there’s too many types and they’re incompatible with each other. Its only value is as fuel in hightemperature incinerators to create steam for electricity generation. Ancient Steve, Redlynch

Oh, the irony. The government can’t house its health workers (CP, 9/11) because of the housing shortage that government policies created. Irony Man, Manunda

Re: Higher rates for landlords. Very unfair when these people provide rental properties, a critical service for the community. Rates go up rents go up. CRC needs to have a good look around Cairns and rake in some revenue by fining the lazy people who badly neglect their properties. Driving past some of these disgraceful homes makes you wonder where one lives. Some have overgrown grass in their front yard reaching the top of high timber fences. Certainly has to be a health risk to those living close by and our city in general.

By implementing their 30% rental property rates this council has shown its lack of empathy for any person who is renting in Cairns. Anon, Cairns

If you keep adding half-cups of takeaway coffee you can eventually fill an Olympic pool, Cr James (CP, 9/11). Your comment wouldn’t be so insulting if you lot weren’t such a bunch of wastrels. Tighten your own belt before picking my pocket. Ex-Landlord, Cairns

The blood moon or lunar eclipse on Tuesday night reminded me that it’s nearly 10 years since the solar eclipse of 14/11/2012 when Cairns was the place to be to watch it. My, how the years have flown.

In the 2020 US Presidential election, Joe Biden won a record low 16.7% of all counties and only one of 12 bellwether states but somehow won the election with the most votes in history. Was that amazing, or what? And now after two years of Democrats systematically destroying the American standard of living they’ve held on in the midterms. If there is not a proper audit of the counting, and if the courts again refuse to hear complaints because of a fictional “lack of standing”, the US is toast. Republican, Cairns

A second Trump term is unthinkable, more lies, chaos, and sucking up to Putin and Kim Jong-un. Surely voters won’t fall for the “make

America great again” trick twice. Dominic, Redlynch

At whose altar will the tin foil hat wearing acolytes worship now that Trump is toast?

Atticus, Cairns

The Teals, funded and backed by millionaires who made their money mostly in oil and gas. What a total farce.

Rick, Redlynch

Here’s an idea to help the thinking of renewables supporters who already have smart meters. All their power must be sourced from wind solar, and batteries. When it’s calm and dark they get a few extra moments of power from batteries and then their power gets switched off until the sun rises high enough or the wind returns. It’s only fair.
