CAIRNS RIDERS HAVE NATIONALS IN SIGHTS

- JAKE GARLAND

SISTERS Elisha and Tenielle Nesbit will defend their titles as they take on the BMX Nationals in Launceston.

A total of 22 Cairns BMX Club Members are travelling to Tasmania to compete across three days, with many competing in multiple classes.

The AusCycling National BMX Championships are being held in Launceston from November 24 to 26.

It will see thousands of riders between ages five up to 60 compete to become a national champion.

Elisha Nesbit has represented Cairns four times at the National BMX Championship and is preparing to defend her title in the 16-year-old Girls & Junior Superclass.

“It is really scary but there is a lot of harder competition this year,” Elisha said. “Really keen to defend my title and help represent Cairns.”

Her sister Tenielle will defend her title in the 17-24 Women’s group.

“I am looking forward to the challenge in Tasmania,” Tenielle said.

“I know it will be very cold down there but I will just stay focused on my ride and do what I can do.”

Up against Tenielle is fellow Cairns BMX rider Eva Cross, who is looking forward to her second national competition.

“I raced last year and did okay but I feel like I am better prepared this year, more determined as well,” Cross said. “I have never been to Tasmania so I am excited to come up against the competition and see what I can do.”

Looking to bring home the title for the 12-year-old boys is Matthew Fox, who is keen to bounce back from not making finals in his first nationals.

“I didn’t make finals last year and that has made me work harder this time around,” Fox said.

“It will be a tough competition this year again but I have trained harder and am more determined to see the hard work pay off.”

The squad will head to Tasmania at the end of this week as they prepare to bring home a collection of championships for the Far North.
