TOTES SUPER

- SARAH RYAN, YEAR 12, ST ANDREW’S CATHOLIC COLLEGE

THE totem poles on our college grounds are titled “Journey”.

When creating this piece, we decided as a group to heavily incorporate the College values and the environment around us through symbolism.

In the far-left totem pole, the pink and purple sections on the top symbolise a sunset, the blue sections symbolise the ocean, and the brown parts symbolise the land. This heavily aligns with the Aboriginal culture, proudly recognised around the College campus.

The middle totem pole shows an aesthetic gradient pattern in the background and the pathway to the cross.

This totem pole strongly reflects a student’s journey throughout St Andrew’s, along with their Catholic identity, love and care for one another. The cross is a strong representation of change and how you, as a person, grow throughout your schooling experience.

This also aligns with the idea of St Andrew’s being a community. As students, we have always been reassured that we journey through schooling together and have a large amount of support behind us, not only from classmates but also from staff members.

In comparison to the other two totem poles, the third totem pole represents community but also individuality.

St Andrew’s mission statement is “to celebrate the uniqueness of each individual”. This is symbolised through different colour circles as they have a unique colour pattern.

The light blue and dark blue intertwining at the bottom represent the ocean, while the top of the totem pole represents the sky as a sunset.

Furthermore, this artwork presents the core values of St Andrew’s Catholic College.

Not only does it represent the mission statement and Catholic identity, but it also represents the environment around us and the Aboriginal culture.

Even though there is a high level of contrast between the colour pattern in each section and the aspect of the totem poles, it all ties in together and creates the aesthetics of the piece.
