SHINING A LIGHT FOR 140 YEARS
This week the Cairns Post celebrates 140 years of delivering the news for Far North Queensland.
The Post was established seven years after the city was established in 1876 and two years before the town had a mayor.
And it has not missed a significant moment since.
Cairns Post editor Tyla Harrington said while much had changed since the first edition was published on May 10, 1883, the core value of being a voice for the community had not.
“We’ve been for the people of Far North Queensland for 140 years,” she said.
“Since the beginning we’ve been part of the conversation, celebrating the region for being a destination of choice for domestic and international travellers, and supporting those willing to push the boundaries so we continue to progress.
“We have always had the best interests of the Far North at the top of mind, and we will continue to do so.”
Ms Harrington said she was proud of the Cairns Post having transitioned to the multiplatform publication it is today.
“There will always be something different about our print product — nothing can match the feeling of turning the last page with ink left on your hands, or the weight that a front page carries,” she said.
“But our digital offering is just as powerful; only in different ways.
“We can explain stories in ways we’ve never been able to before because we simply haven’t had the space. Now we can expand our storytelling with in-depth graphs, interactives and documentary-style videos.
