Bugs on the menu

-

INMATES of a British prison are reportedly supplementing meals with cockroach kebabs after being inspired by I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

Prisoners at HMP Liverpool are swapping recipes on how best to cook the bugs after watching bushtucker trials on the TV show.

The 1183-capacity jail is notorious for its cockroach infestations after inspections in 2003 and 2011 found areas were overrun with the insects.

Neil Harrison-Scott, 43, in a letter to the Inside Time newspaper for prisoners, said he was encouraged to try the “snack” after watching the ITV show.

“My favourite snack, to supplement the poor and meagre prison diet, is cockroaches.

“There are many here and the best way to catch them is by placing empty crisp packets on the floor and turning the lights out.

“You can boil them in the kettle or fry them in an empty tuna tin, but my favourite is cockroach kebabs.

“Simply fashion a skewer from a sliver of wood and impale two or three, then melt a chocolate bar to use as a dip.

“Cockroaches have a nutty taste so when you dip them in chocolate they taste like a fruit and nut bar.

“If celebrities eat them in the jungle then why shouldn’t hungry prisoners get a bit of protein too?”
