Fast lesson in racing history

- — PETER MOHR

THIS weekend the Historic Racing Car Club (Qld) will be holding its annual Autumn Race Meeting at Morgan Park in Warwick.

The fastest cars among the wonderful array of competing vehicles will be the racing and sports cars from the late 1960s through to the late 1980s.

These cars are fast even by today’s standards and are sure to put on a great show.

The fastest is likely to be lap record-holder Chris Farrell from the Gold Coast in his 1982 Ralt RT4.

This is a full ground effects car and Farrell is a very experienced and talented driver, winning many races at Morgan Park and other circuits in Australia and overseas.

He will not have it his own way though, as several other cars are potentially as quick as his.

Among these are Tony Le Messurier’s 1974 Elfin 623, and Rob Hawley in his 1988 Ralt RT4, a similar car to Farrell’s.

This will be Rob’s first race meeting in this car and he will no doubt be feeling his way, but he will quickly be a force to be reckoned with.

The real underdog will be local driver, Matt Campbell, a very talented young man making his mark in all forms of racing.

Gates open at 8am, action starts at 9am, Saturday and Sunday. Entry per day $15, concession $10 and children, 14 and under, are free.
