Australian claims his maiden title

- BIG WIN: Australian Steven Bowditch won his first PGA tour title at the recent Valero Texas Open.

IT WAS exciting news for the City Golf Club last Monday as Steven Bowditch claimed his first ever US PGA tour victory.

Mr Bowditch is highly regarded at City after he played in and won the 2009 Queensland PGA championship held on City’s greens.

At the recent Valero Texas Open, Mr Bowditch headed into the final round with a three shot lead and managed to fend off world number 11, Matt Kuchar, as well as many other top tour players to claim the title.

This win not only raises Mr Bowditch to number 134th in the world, but also gives him an automatic start in the elusive and prestigious Masters tournament, being played in less than two weeks time.

This will be Mr Bowditch’s first start at Augusta National, and his presence strengthens Australia’s assault for the title, with a record six Australian golfers in the starting field.

He will join the likes of defending champion Adam Scott, recent World Matchplay champion Jason Day, as well as Marc Leishman, John Senden and amateur Oliver Goss.

In addition, Mr Bowditch also now has full tour status for the next two years, as well as gaining starts in other large golfing events such as The Players championship in Florida and the tour year’s final major event, the US PGA.

Many spectators and members at City Golf Club will remember Mr Bowditch’s performance in the 2009 Queensland PGA.

His long hitting style and exceptional short game guaranteed his win after he went into the final round with a commanding eight shot lead.

Mr Bowditch’s win is all the more impressive, when taking into account his public battle with depression.

For many years, he has spoken candidly about his condition, and also about how the sport of golf has helped him.

He has now launched himself onto the world golfing stage and is reclaiming his life while building his successful career.

Mr Bowditch’s recent title achievment shows what is possible with hard work and dedication.

It also highlights what a great stepping stone the Australasian PGA tour is for players.

City’s staff and members are honoured to have witnessed players of the calibre of Steven Bowditch play on their greens, and they look forward to welcoming many more at next year’s event.
