MASTERS SUCCESS FOR DUO
NATIONAL MEDALS FOR CYCLISTS
CYCLING in Toowoomba continues its roll and this time it was the turn of Karl Morris and Megan Stevens to fly the city’s flag.
Morris (50–54yrs) and Stevens (45–49yrs) both recorded podium finishes at this year’s Australian Masters Track Cycling Championships in Melbourne.
Morris claimed a bronze medal in the Masters 5 category 500m sprint time trial following his third placing behind world champion Geoff Stoker.
Stevens made a memorable national masters debut to finish with three bronze medals from four events.
She followed her gold, silver and bronze medal performances at the Queensland Masters with third placings in the sprint, scratch race and team pursuit.
Morris is a two-time world championships competitor and produced a personal best time of 35.9 seconds to win his first national medal.
“Competing at the Australian nationals you need to be almost at world level pace to be successful,” Morris said.
“It was a great feeling to be standing on the podium to receive a medal alongside the current world champion Geoff Stoker.”
Morris has been cycling competitively for only five years.
Her 10-year-old daughter, and training partner, Emma is a successful BMX rider and state track riding champion.
“This was my first time at the Australian Masters,” Stevens said.
“I found it a bit daunting at first, but I was keen to experience the event and I definitely want to go back next year.
“I was happy with how I performed and I really enjoyed competing in the team pursuit.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever done one and it’s the first time the event has been held at the nationals.
“I found it very interesting.”
