THE annual writers’ festival USQ Bookcase is back in 2016 with this year promising to be bigger and better than ever.

Currently in its third year, USQ Bookcase offers something for every bookworm, blogger and writer.

Headlining the event will be two USQ alumni - David Burton and Billy Law.

Mr Burton is an award-winning writer, director and playwright.

His young adult memoir, How to Be Happy, was the winner of the 2014 Text Prize for Children and Young Adult’s Writing. It was published in 2015.

As the playwright of more than 25 professionally produced works, including the upcoming St Mary’s in Exile for the Queensland Theatre Company Main Stage 2016 season, Mr Burton is widely known for his educational theatre works.

Mr Law studied at USQ Toowoomba before appearing on season three of the television series MasterChef Australia in 2011 in which he made it into the top seven on the show.

Since then he has started his own food and travel blog, A Table for Two, and released two cookbooks, Have you eaten? and Man Food.

The USQ Bookcase opening night will take place on Friday, July 22, in the USQ Toowoomba Library.

Open to all members of the community, this ticketed evening will include announcements of the prestigious Bruce Dawe Poetry and Get Writing prizes.

The full-day Writers’ Festival is set down for Saturday, July 23 in the USQ Refectory building with Mr Burton to give the keynote address at 9.30am.

The rest of the day will be filled with workshops, panel discussions, author Q&As and book signings, all tailored to help attendees learn how to take their writing from good to great.

Tickets are $5 for a Saturday writer’s festival pass.
