Pay equality

- — A.J. PETERSEN, Westbrook

I AM strongly in support of equality for women, in all areas.

Equality for everyone actually, but let’s stick to women’s equality for the time being.

There is a lot of banter about at the moment about “equal pay for women”.

I am a little perplexed. Hasn’t there been laws in place for quite some years now making it illegal to discriminate against gender in this area?

If statistics show that the female population on average is being paid less, where is this occurring?

Employment Award Rates are not based on gender and in every industry I have worked in, a man doing a particular job is paid the same as a women doing the same job.

Is it that female executives are being paid less?

Does a male vice-president of pencils get paid more than a female vice-president of pencils?

If so then let’s fight for equal pay for women executives.

If this isn’t the case and it’s a case of women not getting the opportunities to become vice-president of pencils, then let’s push for equality for women in career promotion.

But espousing a general comment of “equal pay for women” is inaccurate or at least ambiguous and when something is inaccurate or ambiguous it leaves itself open for criticism and not at all helpful to the cause.
