Make big changes at a small price

MOST of us fear change and I know for me, this fear goes back to childhood. A parent or teacher would admonish us with, “There’s going to be some changes around here!” Eek – change did not seem like something to look forward to.
But as we get older, we realise that change is inevitable and it can be wonderful. And when it comes to personal style, whether it is fashion or your home, embracing change is positive. I mean, what’s the alternative? Get stuck with a “look” long after it has served you? Well, in MHO (My Humble Opinion) that’s never a good look.
Last week, I changed the large rug in my bedroom for a completely new one and new look. While I loved my previous rug it had defined my bedroom for more than five years – and it was time for a change. This got me thinking about the easiest, most cost-effective ways to change the look of your space.
Firstly, and I know I have already used this as an example, change your flooring. If you’ve ever ripped up old carpet to reveal beautiful timber floorboards, you know what I’m talking about. You can also whitewash old or dirty floorboards.
My next suggestion is to change lighting. There are so many fabulous, affordable lighting options, but you will obviously need a professional to handle the electrics.
Another great economical game-changer to alter a space is to rework your walls. You can choose to paint a different colour, but please, no feature walls (so last decade) But what is so 2017 is new-look, designer wallpaper – and this is an especially dramatic option if chosen to complement your furniture and décor.
