Golden era could roll on
Wests’ chance to maintain dominance
Wests are hoping to ensure their era of dominance in Toowoomba Cricket does not come to an end today.
They take on Metropolitan Easts in the TCI open two-day competition final, claiming the minor premiership for the fourth year in a row.
But for those at the club who were around during the harder times, their current prolific period means that much more.
Captain Brian May is one of those players who endured that spell with Wests.
“It is very satisfying but I am not the only person who went through those bad periods with the club,” he said.
“They were there when we were struggling but over the last four-five years some things have changed and it is pleasing to see.”
Even by Wests’ high standards, this cricket season has been one to remember.
The club have fielded a team full of Queensland junior and senior representatives and are topping the statistics with
both bat and ball.
“We lost a few this year but we had a few new guys come in and they have stood up and performed really well,” May said.
“It would be really good to see them win and it would mean a lot for them.”
And with yet another trophy in sight for Wests, May is hoping to stick around and add more silverware to the cabinet for a few years to come.
“I’m not getting any younger but I am still enjoying it,” he said.
“The last four years have been good but the most important thing is that we have been able to have so much fun doing it.”
Mets join Wests in today’s decider as one of the form teams in the competition.
Mets got the better of their opponents the last time the two met, though that was back in round two of the competition in January.
