Wallabies skipper Stephen Moore drops the ball to tackle our car questions
WALLABIES skipper Stephen Moore was never going to be a Fiat 500 or Holden Barina kind of driver. At over six foot and well over 100kg the Queensland Reds and Australian front row is better suited to something more substantial, so it’s little wonder the family man has opted for a large SUV for daily duties.
We threw our searching motoring questions to Australia’s second-highest capped player to find out about his car life past and present. What was your first car?
A 1995 white Mazda 323 Astina. It had the pop up lights which I thought were pretty cool at the time. Unfortunately it eventually packed it in after a few loyal years.
What are you driving now?
A BMW X5. Brilliant car which has plenty of space but still handles superbly. It has all of the safety features and cameras to make it very easy to drive.
What’s the worst car you’ve ever owned or driven?
I’ve been really lucky so far with cars and haven’t had too many issues. Mum had a Kia Carnival which I learnt to drive in. Wasn’t the easiest learning to drive in a people mover.
What cars did your family have while you were growing up?
I have three sisters so with six of us we always had big cars. I think we started with a Nissan Prairie, then a Honda Odyssey, Toyota Tarago...common theme there.
What is your greatest frustration on the road?
When you let someone in or let them pass you on a narrow street and they don’t wave. Do you have any preferred driving music? Usually SmoothFM most of the time. If it’s not that then it’s The Wiggles. Sometimes I’ll drive around without the kids in the car and The Wiggles will be playing for half an hour before I notice it.
You’re off on a road trip. What car would you take, where would you go, and who would you take with you?
A BMW M6 Coupe. I would love to drive along the coast of north western Australia. I’d probably take the late Malcolm Douglas as I grew up watching his television shows about his adventures around Australia. Not sure how he’d go in the M6 though.
If money were no object, what would be your dream car to buy?
Probably a Ferrari 488 GTB. If I could ever get into it.
