Real agenda

-

REGARDING the world news item by C. Bickers (TC, 18/03), “Dutton blames green groups for bullying”.

Ms Bickers writes that Pete Dutton said on 2GB radio that Australians were “sick of political correctness” and that “businesses are terrified of politically correct activists”.

She reported that SA brewer Coopers was “forced into making a statement of its position on same-sex marriage after a backlash online and threats to boycott their beer”. Where is democracy?

The Minister for Immigration condemned the 20 corporate giants for their letter to the PM urging him to pass laws for marriage equality “so the government can get on with its core economic agenda”.

As the hit song says, What’s love got to do with it? The real agenda behind these businesses is money. Those in power are using “global competition” as a reason to bully politicians for their own profit.

Like the bank decorating ATMs with coloured bunting for the Sydney Mardi-Gras, a shoe shop adding coloured laces and fliers about “equality” for free with each purchase of children’s shoes. Like the owners of a US bakery who were sued for offending a customer after they declined to make a SSM wedding cake. The lawyer wins; it’s all about profit.

Mr Dutton wants to have a “respectful debate” on the SMS issue without the bullying. After all we live in a free country don’t we? — SUSAN RUTLAND, Centenary Heights
