Wests too strong in decider

Wests’ TCI open two-day competition grand final win against Mets puts the pin in what has been a dominant season of cricket for the club.

The minor premiers inflicted the majority of the damage on day one on Saturday, bowling over their opponents for 116.

On the second day, captain Brian May top scored with 67 as Wests raced to 2-121 with hours of play still up its sleeve.

Wests adds two-day silverware to the one-day shield it collected last November, cementing its place as the powerhouse of Toowoomba cricket.

Shaun McCarthy finishes the season as the leading two-day wicket-taker with 17 dismissals.

Mets, however, will go into the lengthy break with plenty of positives.

Opener Matt Dennis finished with the second highest total runs in the competition with 281.

Its bowling attack was just as lethal, bowling over three teams in its six games this season.

“Mets are a good team and we had heaps of respect for them,” May said.

“We knew we would have to play well to win it.”

In a season in which some of Wests’ young products emerged as stand-outs, veteran run-scorer May is planning to stick around for the future to see them add a few more trophies to the collection.

“Some of them are only 19 or 20 and they have a long time ahead of them so hopefully they can win a lot more premierships in the years to come,” he said.

“They put in a lot of work this season, and the past three, so I don’t see why they can’t be successful.

“To finish as minor premiers is a really big achievement. To be the most consistent team all season and to be fortunate enough to win today is really special.

“I am lucky to play with these 12 blokes.”
