A FIRE which tore through Dalby State School hit close to home for students at a Toowoomba school who have decided to lend a hand.

Seniors at Fairholme College knew quickly they wanted to do something for staff and students who lost a number of classrooms in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

“We heard about the Dalby fire and so many of our boarders are from Dalby that it was something that hit quite personal to a lot of us,” student Lindy Roos said.

“The fact they lost their classrooms, arts block and old heritage buildings. We have an old building just like that, our homestead, and if we lost that we would be absolutely devastated.”

So the girls decided to host a bake sale, with many hours spent in the kitchen this week to create goodies from cupcakes to brownies to sell to other students and raise money.

“We are not going to raise lots of money so we are thinking of doing something more personal and significant for the students and staff at the school,” Lindy said.

“Something nice and fun and a few extra special things.”

Lindy said there were 15 girls who organised the fundraiser who were part of the school’s service club Interact.

“We are the main organisers, but really everyone is getting involved, everyone is baking,” she said.

The sweet treats will be sold to students at the school today for a gold coin donation.
