Budget wish list
THE federal budget is fast approaching, on May 9.
Now is the time when local and state governments lobby even more strongly for their share of the federal pie.
It is impossible for the government to satisfy all groups.
But there are some things that any fair government must consider.
We need to take better care of the aged and frail.
Pensioners, all too often, are living in poverty or close to it.
The disabled, who for so long have been ignored, must be better funded.
Jobs are the most crucial thing that any budget can deliver. Let’s hope the government has a plan for that. And we need full-time jobs, not the worrying leak into part-time employment.
Major infrastructure works, like the planned inland rail, may provide some impetus in this area.
The Australian dream of owning your own home is fast disappearing. That needs addressing.
Those who want to fund their own retirement should be encouraged. Reducing contributions from $35,000 to $25,000 a year will not do that. If governments want retirees to pay their way, make it worth their while.
Will this budget address the social issues that concern us all, chief among them will be voters asking - does this budget give us and our children hope for the future?
