Apex Club steps in to lend a hand
SOUTH Toowoomba Apex Club president Sarah-Jane MacDonald said the club was always looking for ways to support local community organisations and when they heard Blind Citizens Australia’s Toowoomba branch was looking for assistance in running a fundraising event, they were more than happy to help.
So the club organised a Bunnings barbecue event to fundraise for the branch, which advocates for access and equity for people who are blind or vision impaired.
Ms MacDonald and secretary Georgia Soutar presented branch president Joyce Jones with a donation of more than $1500 on April 1, raised through the barbecue.
Ms Jones said the money would be used for outreach work to people who were losing their sight and to act as a conduit to the main service providers and community organisations.
She said South Toowoomba Apex had run two sausage sizzles for the group and supplied them with “valuable capital”.
“The business of running fundraising events is difficult for us and we greatly appreciate Toowoomba Apex for doing the work for us and Bunnings for providing the venue. It is a wonderful community service,” she said.
She said BCA worked closely with Guide Dogs Queensland and often hold joint meetings to monitor their services and to our members.
“We are always available to anyone with blindness and vision impairment and we also hold social gatherings,” she said.
The South Toowoomba Apex Club is a volunteer
service organisation that offers fellowship, fun and opportunities for personal development.
Ms Soutar said the club had been serving the Toowoomba community for more than 50 years and raised money for charity, provided practical assistance to those in need and promoted citizenship and community spirit.
