Clubs can be vital in push for change
SPORT often has a positive influence on society and Toowoomba Together hopes a new program with Garden City clubs will provide another example of that.
Toowoomba Together, formerly known as Toowoomba Says No To Violence, campaigns to reduce the scourge domestic and family violence has on the community.
It will today launch a new project, Not In Our Club, aimed at using sporting clubs to raise awareness of domestic and family violence.
The project will be launched at the Sports Darling Downs quarterly awards breakfast at City Golf Club, which will take place in front of leading members of the region’s sporting community.
Domestic violence is a cancer in Australia, with statistics an embarrassment.
On average, one Australian woman is killed by a partner or former partner in Australia.
One in three women in Australia has experienced physical violence by the age of 15.
The list goes on and the stats don’t get any better.
That must improve and Toowoomba Together is taking steps to make progress in the Garden City.
The sporting community is in a great position to champion the message that domestic and family violence is not on.
I know I would hate to play alongside anyone who thinks violence is acceptable behaviour.
Hopefully this project is something sporting clubs across Toowoomba can get behind.
