Council gives tick to market

WALTON Stores officially has approval to host the Toowoomba Farmers’ Market in the CBD, nearly a month after the event relocated.

The retail and commercial precinct applied to the council last month to be able to hold the markets in the courtyard between Ruthven and Annand St, but has held three events since April 4.

The council approved the proposal this week, pending final documentation.

The news was welcome for lessee and owner of Junk and 2Birds Scott Hoskins, who said the markets were a great addition to the precinct.

“To activate Walton Stores on a weekend, to really shine a light on what is the country’s best produce, is amazing,” he said.

“From our offerings in our stores, we’re introducing things to people and they’re doing the same.

“There’s nothing but good things there, and I’ve been impressed by the quality of the market stall holders.

“They’re very professional and it’s a standard that would hold its own in a Brisbane market.”

An “acknowledgement notice period” had previously been in place for the move to Walton Stores while the council made a decision.

Directors Barry O’Sullivan and Graham Secombe lodged the application on March 23, with the original decision not expected until November.

The market will start today from 7am.
